A Community Mourns Four Lives Lost

A school shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, has left families and an entire community grieving. Three children and a teacher were killed in the October 15 attack, which took place in a classroom serving students with special needs.

Authorities identified the teacher as 25-year-old Megan Lambert and one of the children as 5-year-old Rhoam Summer. The families of the other two children, boys aged 8 and 11, asked officials not to release their names.

Remembering Megan Lambert

Lambert was a young educator who grew up in Bend and considered teaching at Silver Rail her dream job. Her family described her as compassionate, outspoken and dedicated to supporting children who needed extra help.

She had also been involved in volleyball as both a player and coach. Her family said she cared deeply about helping young people and making activities accessible to families who might otherwise struggle to afford them.

Her death has left relatives, colleagues and students mourning a teacher whose career was only beginning.

Remembering Rhoam Summer

Rhoam Summer was just five years old. His family and community members have remembered him as an energetic child who loved reading, running, climbing and caring for his stuffed animals.

His death has brought particular sorrow to a community already struggling to understand how violence could reach an elementary school classroom.

The two other children who died were 8 and 11. Their families have chosen to keep their identities private, and their wishes should be respected.

Two Survivors Continue Their Recovery

The shooting also injured 7-year-old Saylor Graham and 54-year-old teacher Becky Drury.

Reports on October 18 said both remained hospitalized. Saylor was described by people who know her as a lively child whose spirit has inspired others. Drury suffered serious injuries to her arm and hand and faces a recovery that may require additional treatment.

Their families have received messages of support from people across the country.

A Wider Circle of Grief

The effects of the shooting extend beyond the four people who died. Students who hid during the attack, families waiting for news, school staff, first responders and neighbors are all coping with its aftermath.

Community members have gathered at memorials to leave flowers and other tributes. The tragedy has also renewed difficult questions about school safety and how to protect children and educators.

Authorities continue to investigate the attack and its motive. As the community mourns, families are asking for compassion, privacy and support for everyone affected.
