A historic monument honoring the U.S. Marines who raised the American flag on Iwo Jima during World War II has suffered extensive damage after a man allegedly attacked the sculpture with a sledgehammer in Virginia, police said.
Officers from the Prince William County Police Department responded to a report of property destruction near Marine Corps Base Quantico at approximately 10:30 p.m. on October 21. According to police, officers found a man actively striking the monument with a sledgehammer and detained him without incident.

The suspect was identified as 27-year-old Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano of Stafford, Virginia. He faces felony charges of destruction of property and injury to a monument, as well as a charge of trespassing with intent to damage property. He was being held without bond pending further court proceedings.
Police estimated that the incident caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage. One figure’s head was knocked off, another figure’s rifle bayonet was damaged or removed, and a third figure’s helmet and face sustained visible damage.
Authorities have not established a definitive motive. A police spokesperson said the accused had offered multiple, conflicting explanations for his actions. The allegations remain subject to the legal process, and the suspect is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

The damaged sculpture is a smaller limestone replica of the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia. Both monuments depict the iconic flag-raising scene photographed by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal on February 23, 1945, during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II.
Sculptor Felix de Weldon created the smaller Quantico monument in 1945. The larger bronze memorial in Arlington was completed later and dedicated in 1954. The image represented by the monuments has become one of the most recognizable symbols of American military service and sacrifice.
The Quantico monument has long served as a place for military ceremonies and commemorations. Its damage has raised concerns about preserving an important piece of military history.
Authorities have not announced a repair completion date. Restoration experts will need to assess the damaged stone and determine how the sculpture can be repaired while preserving its historical significance.

The investigation continues. Police have arrested and charged a suspect, but the reason for the alleged attack remains unclear.
