Authorities investigating the notorious 1982 Tylenol poisoning murders are examining possible connections to a man who remained unidentified for more than four decades.

The Ada County Sheriff’s Office in Idaho identified the man as Dr. Mathew Francis Betkouski, who became known as the “Unknown Wanderer” after he was found dead inside Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Boise in December 1982. Investigators determined that he died from cyanide poisoning. His death occurred about three months after seven people in the Chicago area died after taking cyanide-laced Tylenol capsules.

Investigators said information uncovered during a renewed cold-case review raised questions about whether Betkouski could have had a connection to the poisonings. Reports included statements attributed to former co-workers, along with other materials that authorities considered relevant to their inquiry.

However, investigators have acknowledged that they cannot establish that Betkouski was in the Chicago area when the Tylenol deaths occurred. Authorities have not publicly established that he carried out the killings, and his possible connection to the case remains unproven.

The Chicago-area murders triggered widespread public fear and led to major changes in medication packaging and tamper-resistant safety measures. Investigators have spent decades attempting to identify the person or people responsible.

Law enforcement agencies in Illinois have received information from Idaho authorities and are reviewing potential leads. The FBI has cautioned that claims linking individuals to the murders must be supported by credible evidence.

The identification of the Unknown Wanderer could provide investigators with new information to examine, but it does not resolve the decades-old case. The deaths of the seven victims remain an enduring unsolved criminal investigation.

Important clarification: Betkouski’s identification is a development in the investigation, not proof that he was responsible for the Tylenol murders. Authorities have not publicly confirmed who committed the killings.
