A new Stack Overflow survey of about 30,000 software developers across 169 countries found that roughly 6 in 10 tech workers say they try to avoid using AI, even as AI coding tools become increasingly common. The survey was shared with CNN ahead of its publication.
At the same time, 65% of respondents said they use coding assistants or AI agents. Developers appear to be taking a mixed approach: many use AI for specific tasks such as writing and debugging code, while remaining cautious about relying on it for important decisions.
Why are developers hesitant?

Some programmers say AI lacks the context and experience needed to understand complicated software systems. Others say that relying heavily on AI can make developers feel disconnected from the problem-solving process.
The survey found that more than 74% of respondents consider AI useful for implementing code and about 72% find it helpful for debugging. But only 6.6% said they trust AI with important decisions.
The rapid changes are also contributing to burnout, technology fatigue and uncertainty about career progression, according to Stack Overflow CEO Prashanth Chandrasekar.
The bigger picture

The findings don’t mean developers are rejecting AI altogether. Instead, they suggest a growing divide between using AI as a productivity tool and trusting AI to take over important parts of software engineering.
