New White House Press Secretary Faces Questions After Brief First Briefing

Katie Zacharia, newly appointed White House press secretary to President Donald Trump, faced pointed questions from Fox News host Sean Hannity during an interview about her first press briefing and her legal credentials.

Zacharia’s first briefing on October 13 lasted approximately 14 minutes, and she took questions from only three reporters. The short appearance drew criticism and prompted questions about how prepared she was for one of the administration’s most visible communications roles.

During her interview on Hannity’s program, Zacharia said she had little time to prepare after accepting the position. She explained that briefing materials were provided on the morning of her first appearance and said she had done her best under the circumstances.

The conversation also turned to her legal background. Zacharia graduated from Pepperdine University’s law school in 2011 but confirmed that she did not pass the California bar exam and never retook it. A law degree alone does not authorize someone to practise law as a licensed attorney in the United States.

Questions arose because Zacharia had previously been described as an attorney, including by Trump when he announced her appointment. During the interview, she said some social-media references to her as an attorney were retweets rather than endorsements of that title.

Zacharia has said she moved to China after law school and worked with an international-practice team at a Chinese law firm. Her explanation has not ended scrutiny of how her professional credentials were presented publicly.

The controversy comes as the White House prepares for the November 2026 midterm elections, when administration messaging and press briefings are likely to receive close attention.

The key issue: Zacharia’s short first briefing and questions about her professional credentials have put her early performance under scrutiny. Her own explanations and the administration’s statements should be distinguished from criticism by commentators and other observers.
