Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson pushed back against President Donald Trump’s renewed claims that the city is experiencing an “unprecedented” crime wave, arguing that violence has fallen significantly and that the federal government should restore funding for programs aimed at reducing crime.

In an interview with CNN’s Kate Bolduan, Johnson said Chicago is experiencing historically low levels of violence. His comments came after Trump again suggested that the federal government could intervene if the mayor or Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker requested assistance.

Johnson Points to Declining Violence

Johnson said Chicago recorded major reductions in several categories of violent crime and argued that the city’s progress should not be overlooked.

He pointed to a 28% reduction in homicides last year, nearly a 35% decline in robberies and an almost 50% decrease in vehicular hijackings. He also said Chicago experienced its safest summer in more than six decades.

More recent reporting also shows homicides continuing to decline. Chicago had recorded 321 homicides through September, about 3% fewer than at the same point the previous year.

🇺🇸 Trump Calls for Federal Help

Trump has continued to criticize Chicago’s handling of crime and said the federal government could address the problem quickly if local officials asked for help.

Johnson rejected the idea that the city needs the type of intervention Trump is proposing. Instead, he called on the administration to restore federal resources for violence-prevention programs and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Johnson specifically criticized cuts to federal violence-prevention funding and said the ATF plays an important role in helping Chicago remove illegal guns from the streets.

Debate Over What Is Driving the Decline

Johnson credited community violence intervention programs and increased youth employment with helping reduce violence.

He said areas with community violence intervention workers have seen reductions in violence of as much as 45% to 50%. He also said the city has removed more than 9,000 illegal weapons from the streets.

But critics of the mayor argue that the decline in Chicago violence is part of a broader national trend and should not be attributed entirely to Johnson’s policies. Chicago’s police union president John Catanzara made that argument while discussing a recent fatal stabbing of a 7-year-old girl.

Johnson Addresses Child’s Death

During the CNN interview, Bolduan also asked Johnson about the recent killing of a 7-year-old Chicago girl.

Johnson called the death a devastating tragedy and said he had spoken with the child’s family. He argued that continued investment in violence-prevention and community programs is necessary to reduce the risk of future tragedies.

The clash between Trump and Johnson highlights a broader political debate over Chicago: while serious violence remains a reality in parts of the city, available data show an overall decline in killings and several other violent crimes.
