Abu Dhabi is strengthening its investment ties with China through a major bet on one of the country’s fastest-growing consumer brands: Luckin Coffee.

Mubadala Investment Company, Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund, agreed in September to make a significant minority investment in Luckin Coffee as part of a transaction worth approximately $1 billion. The deal was made alongside Centurium Capital, Luckin’s controlling shareholder.

But the investment is about more than coffee. It reflects Abu Dhabi’s broader strategy of expanding its presence in China’s consumer economy while reducing its dependence on oil-related industries.

Why Luckin Coffee?

Luckin has rapidly expanded China’s coffee market with an app-based business model, affordable drinks and a large store network. The company now operates more than 36,000 stores globally, according to reporting on the deal.

For Mubadala, the investment offers exposure to China’s growing consumer sector at a time when policymakers are seeking stronger domestic consumption to support economic growth.

Mubadala said it continues to see compelling long-term opportunities in China’s consumer economy.

🇨🇳 Abu Dhabi’s Bigger China Strategy

The Luckin investment is only part of a much larger relationship.

Mubadala says it has invested more than $20 billion in China over the past decade, with investments spanning consumer businesses, healthcare and technology. The sovereign wealth fund has made more than 100 investments in the country, according to reporting on the strategy.

The UAE and China also established a major investment partnership in 2015 involving China Development Bank Capital and the State Administration of Foreign Exchange. The partnership was designed around a $10 billion UAE-China investment fund.

Mubadala opened an office in Beijing in 2023, further strengthening its ability to work with Chinese companies and investors.

Why the Deal Matters

The investment highlights how Gulf sovereign wealth funds are increasingly looking beyond traditional energy investments.

As China seeks to shift its economy toward consumption, technology and domestic demand, Abu Dhabi sees opportunities to deploy capital into sectors that could benefit from that transition.

The move also comes amid complicated relations between China and the United States, making Gulf investment in China’s consumer and technology-related economy increasingly significant.

For Luckin, the deal brings a major international investor and further signals the company’s recovery and expansion after the accounting scandal that forced it off the Nasdaq in 2020.

For Abu Dhabi, the message is broader: China’s economy remains an important destination for long-term capital, and sometimes the next major investment opportunity comes with a cup of coffee.
