What We Know About the Suspect
Authorities identified the suspect in the deadly shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, as Griffin J. John II, a 16-year-old former student at the school.
The attack on October 15 killed three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and a 25-year-old teacher. A 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old educator were also injured. The teenage suspect was fatally shot by a parent who intervened during the attack, according to police.
The shooting has left families and the wider Bend community grieving while investigators work to establish what led the teenager to enter his former school and open fire.
He Previously Attended the School
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said the teenager had previously attended Silver Rail Elementary but was not currently enrolled in the local school district.
The school district’s superintendent said the teenager had been a student with special educational needs while attending the school. Authorities have not established that this background explains the attack, and it should not be treated as evidence of a motive.
Police said the suspect entered the school after shooting through glass panes in locked exterior doors. He then went into a special-education classroom, where all four victims who died were located.
What Police Know About the Weapon
Investigators said the teenager used a Maverick 88 12-gauge pump-action shotgun. Police have been investigating how he obtained possession of the firearm.
Reports citing people familiar with the investigation indicated that his mother may have purchased the weapon. However, authorities have not publicly established all the circumstances surrounding its acquisition, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Police also reported recovering additional ammunition from the suspect’s backpack. Investigators are continuing to collect evidence, execute search warrants and interview witnesses.
A Parent Intervened
According to police, a parent whose children attended Silver Rail witnessed the suspect outside the school and followed him into the building. Inside, the parent encountered a teacher struggling with the gunman and intervened by firing at the suspect.
The teacher had attempted to stop the shooter and protect the children. Police praised the actions of both individuals, saying their intervention may have prevented further deaths.
The suspect died before responding officers arrived at the classroom.
The Victims and the Community
The victims included three young children and 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert, whose family described her as deeply committed to her students and especially supportive of children with special needs.
The surviving injured child and educator received hospital treatment. Their injuries were reported by authorities as serious, although the child was described as being in stable condition in subsequent updates.
Residents gathered for a vigil and left flowers, toys and other tributes outside the school. Local schools were closed the following day as the community began to process the tragedy.
Investigators Have Not Established a Motive
Police Chief Krantz said investigators were also seeking to understand why the teenager carried out the attack. As of October 17, authorities had not announced a definitive motive.
Investigators are examining evidence from the school and the suspect’s home, alongside witness accounts and other information that may help reconstruct his actions.
Officials have cautioned that determining a motive can take considerable time and that some questions may remain unanswered.
