A deadly shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, left three children and one teacher dead on October 15, according to police. The 16-year-old suspected gunman also died at the scene after a community member confronted him inside the school.
Police said the first emergency call came shortly before 1 p.m. local time. The initial report described a person with a long gun firing at a vehicle near the school. Additional calls soon reported that a shooter had entered the building.
Investigators said the suspect forced his way inside by firing at locked doors. A community member who saw the teenager enter the school followed him inside and shot him before responding officers arrived, according to police.
The three children who died were 5, 8 and 11 years old. A teacher also died. Another child, aged 7, and a second teacher were hospitalized with critical injuries, authorities said.
The suspected shooter was a 16-year-old resident of Bend, but officials had not publicly identified him in the reports available at the time. Investigators were still working to determine whether he had any connection to the school and what motivated the attack.
Authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including how the suspect entered the school and the events leading up to the attack. No motive has been confirmed.
In response to the tragedy, the Bend-La Pine School District canceled classes, sports and other activities for Friday, October 16. Community members gathered to support affected families as local officials arranged assistance for students, staff and residents.
