Russia launched strikes near Ukraine’s border with Poland on Sunday, bringing the war dangerously close to the territory of the European Union and NATO. Ukrainian officials said a Russian drone struck near the Yahodyn–Dorohusk border crossing, only about 800 meters from the Polish border. The crossing was temporarily closed during the attack.
In a separate incident, a Russian drone struck the locomotive of a passenger train in Ukraine’s Volyn region, about 2 kilometers from the Polish border. Ukrainian Railways said no one was injured after the train crew was warned of the danger.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the attacks, saying Russia’s actions were bringing the conflict directly toward the borders of the EU and NATO. Ukrainian officials have urged Western allies to respond with stronger pressure on Moscow.
The attacks came during a broader Russian aerial assault on Ukraine. Ukrainian authorities reported 453 Russian drones launched overnight on September 13, while other strikes hit areas across the country.
The developments are particularly sensitive for Poland, a NATO member and one of Ukraine’s most important routes for Western military and humanitarian assistance. Poland has already warned that Russia could intensify provocations around Ukraine’s European border crossings.
The latest strikes have heightened concerns that Russia’s campaign against Ukrainian transport and border infrastructure could increasingly affect routes connecting Ukraine with its European allies.
