A major fire at a seafood processing facility in Newport, Oregon, prompted evacuations on Sunday after officials raised concerns about possible ammonia exposure from the burning building.
The fire broke out at Pacific Seafood’s facility along Newport’s historic Bayfront shortly before 9 a.m. local time on October 25. Thick smoke rose above the coastal city as firefighters worked to contain the blaze.
Authorities initially issued evacuation instructions for an area extending roughly one mile from the plant. Residents were urged to leave affected areas, while others in Newport were advised to remain indoors and avoid the smoke. People who needed to go outside were advised to wear a mask.

The Oregon State Fire Marshal dispatched a hazardous-materials team because the facility uses anhydrous ammonia in its refrigeration system. Exposure to high concentrations of ammonia can irritate or damage the eyes, skin and respiratory system.
Firefighters were particularly concerned that the blaze or a possible building collapse could damage the ammonia storage tanks and cause a dangerous release. Officials later reported that the tank had been located and did not appear to be punctured or leaking. Crews continued monitoring conditions and assessing the potential risks.

Approximately 30 to 40 employees were inside the building when the fire began. Pacific Seafood said all employees had been accounted for. Officials reported that one firefighter was taken to a hospital for exhaustion; no other injuries were reported in the latest accounts.
As emergency crews made progress, authorities reduced the initial evacuation area. Local reporting later indicated that the evacuation order was lifted Sunday evening, although people were advised to follow official instructions concerning road closures and any remaining hazards.
The fire caused substantial damage to the processing facility, and parts of the building reportedly collapsed. Pacific Seafood said it expected a major loss and was working with emergency responders to assess the damage.
The incident also affected Newport’s historic waterfront, an important center for the local fishing industry and tourism. Officials said the fire’s cause remained under investigation, and the full financial and operational impact had not yet been determined.
Newport officials urged residents to follow updates from the city and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office while emergency crews continued their work.

Key takeaway: The fire triggered a significant emergency response because of concerns about ammonia and smoke. Authorities later reported that the ammonia tank appeared stable and that the evacuation area had been reduced. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
