🏷️ Topic: Nancy Guthrie disappearance, missing-person investigation

The search for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC Today show anchor Savannah Guthrie, remains unresolved more than seven months after she disappeared from her Arizona home.
Nancy Guthrie was last seen on the night of January 31, 2026, after spending the evening with family. Investigators believe she was abducted from her home during the early hours of February 1. No suspect or person of interest has been publicly identified.
January 31: Last Known Movements
Nancy Guthrie traveled by Uber to her daughter Annie Guthrie’s home at about 5:32 p.m. for dinner and game night.
Later that evening, a family member drove her back to her home in the Tucson area. Her garage door opened at approximately 9:48 p.m. and closed about two minutes later.

Investigators have said this is the last confirmed period when Nancy was known to be safely at home.
February 1: Nancy Disappears
At approximately 1:47 a.m., Nancy’s doorbell camera disconnected from its system.
Around 2:12 a.m., the camera software detected movement, although investigators did not have usable video of that moment. About 16 minutes later, at 2:28 a.m., data associated with Nancy’s pacemaker showed that the device had disconnected from her phone.
Relatives discovered she was missing late that morning. The family called 911 at 12:03 p.m., and sheriff’s deputies arrived shortly afterward.
Investigators later confirmed that blood found on the front porch matched Nancy’s DNA.
Masked Person Seen at Home

Investigators eventually recovered surveillance images showing a masked individual outside Nancy’s home around the time of her disappearance.
Authorities described the person as a medium-built man, approximately 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, wearing a ski mask and gloves and carrying a large backpack.
The FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department released images and video in an effort to identify the person.
Ransom Messages Complicate Investigation
The case has involved multiple alleged ransom messages.
One early message demanded millions of dollars, while another message claimed Nancy had died. Authorities warned that some communications were fraudulent or extortion attempts.
A California man was later arrested and prosecuted for sending an imposter ransom note connected to the case.
September 28: New Possible Ransom Note
After months without a major breakthrough, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said on September 28 that its joint task force with the FBI had become aware of a new possible ransom note.
Investigators also knew about social-media comments connected to the alleged note and began examining whether it was credible. At the time, authorities did not disclose what the note said or who had provided it.
September 29: Note Ruled Not Credible
By September 29, authorities said the new ransom communication was not credible.
According to the Associated Press, a Tucson woman reported being contacted through social media by someone claiming Nancy was alive and demanding a ransom. The woman herself did not believe the person was connected to Nancy’s disappearance.
The sheriff’s department urged anyone who receives messages related to Nancy’s disappearance to report them to law enforcement and warned people to be cautious of potential scams.
Human Remains Found in August
Another major development came in August, when human remains were discovered in the Tucson-area desert roughly 15 miles from the area where Nancy was believed to have been abducted.
Authorities quickly said there was no indication the remains were connected to Nancy Guthrie, but the discovery brought renewed attention to the case.
Investigation Remains Active

The FBI continues assisting the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. Investigators have examined surveillance footage, digital evidence, DNA and other potential leads.
Earlier in the investigation, DNA recovered from gloves found near Nancy’s home was determined not to match Nancy or anyone in the FBI database. Authorities also said those gloves were ultimately connected to a local restaurant employee who was not considered part of the investigation.
Family Continues Search for Answers
Savannah Guthrie and her family have repeatedly appealed to the public for information about Nancy’s disappearance.
Despite months of searching, investigators have not publicly named a suspect and Nancy has not been found.
The case remains an active investigation, and authorities continue to ask anyone with credible information, surveillance footage or other evidence to contact law enforcement.
