Vice President JD Vance used the second night of the Republican midterm convention to present himself as a potential leader of the party’s future, focusing on family, faith and the stakes of the November elections.

But President Donald Trump ultimately dominated the night. Trump spoke for more than 25 minutes after Vance’s keynote address, repeating familiar themes and urging Republicans to turn out in large numbers to protect the party’s control of Congress.

The unusual two-day Republican midterm convention in Dallas, Texas, comes less than two months before voters decide whether Republicans will retain control of the House and Senate.

Vance’s appearance also drew attention to the GOP’s future beyond Trump. Some members of the convention crowd even began chanting “48,” a reference to the next president potentially becoming the nation’s 48th president.

CNN’s key takeaway is that while Vance was given a major platform, Trump remained the central figure of the Republican Party and its 2026 midterm campaign.
