Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon was among protesters detained by New York City police during a demonstration outside the United Nations headquarters on Thursday, September 24, as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu prepared to address the UN General Assembly.

The demonstration was organized by Jewish Voice for Peace and drew hundreds of protesters, according to reports. Demonstrators staged a sit-in on First Avenue and held signs carrying messages including “Fund people not bombs” and “No war.” Police ordered protesters to leave the roadway before taking those who remained into custody.

Sarandon was photographed and filmed being led away by police. Actress Hannah Einbinder, comedian Caleb Hearon, former intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning, New York City Council member Chi Ossé and congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier were also among those detained, according to multiple reports.

The precise number of arrests was not immediately consistent across reports. Reuters initially reported at least 30 arrests, while CBS New York cited police sources estimating about 100 people had been taken into custody. Other reporting put the number at more than 100.

The protest occurred shortly before Netanyahu delivered his address to the 81st UN General Assembly. Inside the UN, dozens of delegations walked out as he began speaking. Netanyahu defended Israel’s actions and criticized countries and officials he said had opposed Israel.

The demonstrations reflected the sharply divided reactions to Netanyahu’s appearance in New York. Alongside the protesters, a separate group gathered to express support for Israel and to challenge the messages of the anti-Netanyahu demonstrators. CBS New York reported that some confrontations between opposing groups became heated.

Sarandon has previously participated in demonstrations related to the Israel-Gaza conflict. Her detention at Thursday’s protest brought additional attention to the demonstration as Netanyahu’s UN appearance drew international criticism and walkouts.
