Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon was among protesters detained by New York police during a demonstration ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to the United Nations General Assembly, according to CNN.

The protest took place near the United Nations headquarters in Manhattan on September 24. CNN reported that pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered in large numbers, with police detaining a number of people during the demonstrations. CNN said it was initially unclear why Sarandon was detained or whether she was later released.

Reuters reported that at least 30 people were arrested, including Sarandon, actress Hannah Einbinder, New York City Council member Chi Ossé and Democratic congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier. Other reports put the number of people taken into custody at around 100.

Video and photographs from the protest showed Sarandon among demonstrators before she was taken away by police. Protesters held signs and chanted slogans criticizing Israel’s military operations and calling for greater support for Palestinians.

The demonstration occurred as Netanyahu prepared to address the 81st United Nations General Assembly. Inside the UN, dozens of diplomats walked out as Netanyahu began his speech. CNN reported that Netanyahu responded by criticizing those who left and calling them “moral cowards.”

Sarandon has publicly expressed support for Palestinian causes in recent years and has previously discussed the impact of her political activism on her career. Her detention has therefore drawn additional attention because of her status as a prominent Hollywood actor.

The events in New York came amid continuing international disagreement over Israel’s military operations in Gaza and the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Different governments, political groups and international organizations continue to dispute the characterization of the conflict and the appropriate response.
