A 46-year-old pediatric critical care physician was stabbed to death inside his home near Pittsburgh, while his wife was critically injured in the attack, authorities said. The couple’s two children were also inside the house but escaped safely to a neighbor’s home.
The victim was identified as Dr. Idris Evans, a pediatric critical care physician at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and an assistant professor of critical care medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. Evans was taken to a hospital after the attack but was pronounced dead from his injuries. His wife remained in critical condition.
According to a criminal complaint, the couple woke shortly after midnight Thursday to a man in their bedroom who was allegedly armed with a knife. The wife told investigators that she and Evans fought back while she yelled for their children to flee. She was able to escape the home and reach a neighbor for help.
Police identified the suspect as 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway. Investigators believe he entered the house through a rear window before attacking the couple. A police K-9 unit later located him hiding behind a nearby home, where officers found him with significant cuts on his hands. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Hemingway faces multiple charges, including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary and criminal trespass, according to police. Authorities have not yet established a motive and are investigating whether Hemingway knew Evans or his wife. Police said the wife told investigators she did not recognize the attacker.
The criminal complaint describes a violent scene inside the home, including broken bedroom furniture and mirrors. Investigators also reported blood throughout parts of the residence and a bloodstained kitchen knife. Authorities said the suspect allegedly demanded the wife’s car keys before fleeing through the rear of the home.
Evans’ death has drawn a strong response from the medical community. UPMC said he was a dedicated caregiver and valued member of the hospital and university communities, expressing condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
The investigation remains active as police work to establish the motive and reconstruct what happened inside the home. The charges against Hemingway are allegations, and the case will proceed through the criminal court system.
