NYC releases 170,000 pages of 9/11 records, revealing new details about air quality concerns

New York City has released more than 170,000 pages of previously undisclosed records concerning air quality and health risks in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, attacks.

The documents indicate that city officials were aware of serious concerns about the air around Ground Zero, even while the public was repeatedly assured that the air was safe. The newly released material includes air-quality reports, internal communications and the so-called โ€œHarding Memo,โ€ which raised concerns about potential legal liability related to toxic exposure.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the release on September 8, saying the records would provide greater transparency for survivors, first responders and families affected by 9/11-related illnesses.

The city says the initial release is only the beginning, with additional records expected to be made public over the coming months. The public portal was created as part of a settlement following a legal battle over access to the records.

Why this matters

The records could provide new information about what city officials knew about toxic air around Ground Zero, when they knew it, and how the government responded after the attacks. The release comes just days before the 25th anniversary of 9/11.
