James Copenhaver, one of the people wounded during the 2024 assassination attempt on then-presidential candidate Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, has died at age 76, his family announced Thursday.
Copenhaver died Wednesday at a Pittsburgh hospital, according to the Allegheny County Office of the Medical Examiner. His cause and manner of death have not been disclosed and remain pending. His family attorney, Joseph Feldman, said Copenhaver died surrounded by his loved ones.
On July 13, 2024, Copenhaver was sitting in the bleachers at the Butler Farm Show grounds when gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, opened fire from a nearby rooftop. Trump was grazed in the ear, while Copenhaver and fellow attendee David Dutch were seriously wounded. Corey Comperatore, 50, was killed while shielding his family.
Copenhaver suffered gunshot wounds to his arm and abdomen. His injuries required extensive medical treatment, and he later experienced lasting nerve damage and other health problems. He was released from the hospital roughly two weeks after the shooting.
The family’s attorney described Copenhaver as a devoted husband, father and grandfather and noted his service as a military veteran. The family said the support and prayers they received during the two years following the shooting brought them comfort.
Copenhaver and his wife, Marianne Copenhaver, filed a federal lawsuit in June accusing the U.S. Secret Service and Department of Homeland Security of failing to provide adequate security at the Butler rally. The lawsuit alleges that security failures allowed Crooks to reach the rooftop from which he fired. Those allegations remain part of ongoing litigation.
Trump and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro both expressed condolences following Copenhaver’s death. Trump described him as a “true American Patriot,” while Shapiro remembered the victims of the Butler shooting and said political violence is unacceptable.
Copenhaver’s death means that two people who were present at the July 2024 rally have now died from the attack: Corey Comperatore was killed during the shooting, while Copenhaver died more than two years later. Authorities have not yet determined whether Copenhaver’s death was directly related to his gunshot injuries.
