Actress Hayden Panettiere, known for Heroes, Nashville and the Scream franchise, died on August 16 at age 36. Her death remains under investigation, with authorities still awaiting toxicology and other testing that could help determine the official cause and manner of death.
Panettiere was found unconscious and in cardiac arrest at an apartment in Greenville, South Carolina, after a 911 call around 1:51 p.m. Emergency responders attempted to revive her, but she was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m. Her autopsy found no signs of trauma that contributed to her death.
The investigation has since expanded beyond South Carolina. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) joined the investigation in August, and federal and Los Angeles-area authorities are examining whether Panettiere obtained illicit or counterfeit prescription drugs before her death. CNN reported that investigators are particularly examining events surrounding her final days.
According to the CNN report, authorities are looking into allegations that Panettiere may have obtained drugs from a dealer in Southern California. The Los Angeles Times reported that investigators were examining the possibility that she took what was described as a counterfeit oxycodone pill. However, no official cause of death has been announced, and authorities have not publicly confirmed that an overdose caused her death.
Panettiere’s final months had included conversations about her struggles with addiction, postpartum depression, domestic violence and personal loss. In interviews earlier this year, she also spoke about the death of her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, and expressed hope that she had moved beyond some of the darkest periods of her life.
The actress’s family and representatives have asked for privacy as the investigation continues. Until toxicology and other examinations are completed, authorities have not made a definitive determination about what caused her death.
