New details have emerged about a former Cornell University student’s allegations of sexual assault at a fraternity house in 2024, raising fresh questions about how the case was initially investigated and what information prosecutors received.
The woman, identified in court documents as Jane Doe, told Cornell University police that she was intoxicated, felt pressured into sexual activity and did not consent to certain encounters at the Chi Phi fraternity house. CNN obtained a six-page statement she provided to campus police.

In that statement, Doe described feeling unable to make decisions because of her level of intoxication. She said she repeatedly felt uncomfortable, resisted some advances and eventually gave in after being repeatedly asked to have sex. She characterized the pressure as coercion.
A separate November 2024 interview transcript, obtained by CNN affiliate WCBS, reportedly contains a more explicit statement from Doe: “I can say with 100% confidence I was raped.” CNN said it had not independently reviewed that transcript.
Dispute over what the district attorney received
Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten told CNN that his office received Doe’s written statement but not the separate interview transcript before deciding not to pursue criminal charges. He said prosecutors and investigators reviewed the statement and concluded that the facts described did not establish a crime under the law.

Cornell University, meanwhile, said its police shared all investigative information with the district attorney’s office. The university did not specifically clarify whether the interview transcript was included.
The disagreement has intensified scrutiny of the original investigation and prompted calls for greater transparency. Van Houten said his office would investigate the newly reported statements.
Civil lawsuit and university review
Doe filed a civil lawsuit in September against Cornell University, members of the Chi Phi fraternity and other parties. The complaint alleges that she was drugged and sexually assaulted by multiple fraternity members. Those allegations have not been established in court, and the accused individuals have denied wrongdoing.
Cornell has agreed to an independent review of its handling of the case. The university has also faced criticism from students and others who want clearer answers about how the original investigation was conducted.
The case has renewed broader discussions about consent, intoxication, campus police procedures and how universities coordinate with local prosecutors when investigating sexual assault allegations.
As the criminal investigation continues, key questions remain about the evidence collected in 2024, what was shared with prosecutors and whether the newly reported interview details will affect the case.
