A School Day Turns Into a Tragedy

A school day that began with students preparing for picture day turned into a tragedy at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on October 15. A 16-year-old former student entered the school and opened fire in a classroom serving students with special educational needs, killing three children and a teacher, according to police.

Authorities identified the shooter as Griffin J. John II. The victims included children aged 5, 8 and 11, as well as 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert. A 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher were also injured and taken to hospital.

The attack and the response unfolded within minutes, leaving families, students and staff facing a devastating emergency.

How the Shooting Unfolded

According to information released by Bend police, the sequence began shortly before 1 p.m. local time.

  • Around 12:58 p.m.: Police said the teenager approached the school grounds, threw a shotgun over a fence and climbed onto the property. A driver in a pickup truck confronted him verbally, and the suspect fired at the vehicle.
  • 12:59 p.m.: Emergency dispatchers received a 911 call reporting that someone had fired at a vehicle.
  • Around 1 p.m.: Dispatchers alerted law enforcement as additional calls reported a shooter inside the school.
  • 1:01 p.m.: Authorities directed the school to go into lockdown.
  • 1:02 p.m.: The first responding officers arrived. Police reported that the suspect had already been shot by a community member.

Investigators said the teenager forced entry through glass doors and entered a classroom, where he fired multiple rounds. Police said he had fired approximately 15 shotgun rounds inside the classroom.

Teacher and Parent Intervene

During the attack, a teacher tried to stop the shooter. Police said she threw her cellphone at him, tackled him and attempted to take control of his weapon.

A 36-year-old father whose children attended the school had witnessed the earlier incident outside. He followed the suspect into the building carrying a legally possessed handgun and fired at him after encountering the confrontation in the classroom.

The suspect died at the scene before officers arrived. Police Chief Mike Krantz praised the teacher’s actions, saying they likely prevented further bloodshed.

The father was later identified by his family as Kaylub Giamanco. His family said he was grateful for the support shown to the school community and asked for privacy.

A Community Mourns the Victims

Lambert, who was 25, was remembered by her family as a dedicated teacher who advocated for students, particularly those with special needs. Her family described working at Silver Rail as her dream job and expressed gratitude to those who intervened during the shooting.

Parents rushed to reunification locations to find out whether their children were safe. Students and teachers who had been inside the school described hiding, hearing gunshots and trying to keep one another calm.

Residents later gathered to mourn the victims, leaving flowers and other tributes near the school.

Investigators Still Searching for Answers

Police have said the motive remains under investigation. Authorities are also examining how the teenager obtained the shotgun, which officials said had been purchased by his mother.

Investigators have not established a definitive explanation for the attack. Officials have urged the public to avoid speculation while they continue gathering evidence.

The tragedy has renewed concern about school security and the risks faced by students and educators. It has also drawn attention to the split-second decisions made by the teacher and parent who confronted the shooter.

What is known: Four victims — three children and one teacher — were killed. Two other people were injured, the 16-year-old suspect died at the scene, and the motive remains unknown.
