James Copenhaver, one of the people wounded during the July 13, 2024 assassination attempt at Donald Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, has died at age 76, his family said through an attorney.
Copenhaver died Wednesday at a Pittsburgh hospital, according to the Allegheny County Office of the Medical Examiner. His family attorney, Joseph Feldman, said he was surrounded by loved ones when he died and described him as a devoted husband, father and grandfather. The medical examiner had not yet determined his cause and manner of death.
During the 2024 rally, a gunman opened fire from a nearby rooftop while Trump was speaking onstage. Trump was grazed in the ear, while Copenhaver and former Marine David Dutch were seriously wounded. Corey Comperatore, another rally attendee, was killed while shielding his family.
Copenhaver suffered gunshot wounds to his arm and abdomen. He spent about two weeks in the hospital and later told a CNN affiliate that one bullet tore into his triceps while another remained lodged in his body. The injuries caused lasting nerve damage and required him to use a cane.
In June 2026, Copenhaver and his wife, Marianne, filed a lawsuit against the federal government. The lawsuit alleges that the Secret Service failed to provide adequate security at the rally and describes his injuries as permanent and life-altering. The case remains ongoing.
Trump responded to Copenhaver’s death by calling him a “true American Patriot” and expressing condolences to his family. Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro also mourned Copenhaver and said the political violence that occurred in Butler should not be repeated.
Copenhaver’s death leaves David Dutch as the surviving attendee who was wounded alongside him and Comperatore during the 2024 attack. The circumstances surrounding Copenhaver’s death remain subject to the medical examiner’s determination.
