More than 167,000 pounds of raw meat are being recalled across the United States after federal officials determined the products were produced without the required federal inspection and carried a false USDA inspection mark. Star Meat Delivery Inc., based in Lucama, North Carolina, is recalling approximately 167,639 pounds of raw beef, pork and goat products.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service classified the recall as Class I, the agency’s highest-risk recall category. USDA says this designation is used when there is a reasonable probability that consuming the affected products could result in serious adverse health consequences or death.

The recalled products carry the establishment number โEST. 1363.โ USDA says that number does not have a federal grant of inspection. The products were produced on various dates before September 22 and were shipped to A&D Foods, a Georgia distributor, before being sent to restaurants and retailers around the country.
The recall includes numerous raw meat products, including ribeye slices, beef oxtail, beef short ribs, ground pork, pork chorizo, pork chops, pork ribs, pork feet and various goat products. USDA warned that identifying the recalled meat could be difficult because retailers may have placed their own pricing or safe-handling stickers on individual packages.

Officials say meat produced without federal inspection could contain undeclared allergens, harmful bacteria or other contaminants. So far, USDA has reported no confirmed illnesses or injuries linked to the recalled products. The agency said its investigation is continuing and that the list of affected products could be expanded.
Consumers who may have purchased the affected meat are being urged not to eat it. USDA recommends throwing the products away or returning them to the place of purchase. Restaurants and retailers have also been told not to sell or serve the recalled products.
Star Meat Delivery has disputed the characterization of its inspection number as falsified, saying the number was legitimately reserved during its application for USDA approval and that the meat was sourced from a USDA-inspected supplier. The company said it is cooperating with authorities and following the recall procedures.
