Five people have been identified as the victims of a deadly Amazon cargo plane crash at Miami International Airport, after the aircraft overran a runway and struck vehicles near the airport.

The victims were identified as Rolando Aleman Leon, 55; Yoel Rodriguez Naranjo, 53; Julio C. Pineda, 75; Carlos Acosta Fajardo, 53; and Javierkys Reyes Quevedo, 47. All five were inside a work van when the cargo jet crashed into it.

The aircraft was a Boeing 767-300 freighter operated by 21 Air and was carrying Amazon cargo. Investigators said the plane overran Runway 30 at Miami International Airport, struck airport equipment and then crashed through fencing before hitting the van and another vehicle.

The National Transportation Safety Board said the aircraft had traveled well beyond the normal touchdown area. Preliminary flight-recorder information showed the plane touched down at a ground speed of about 158 knots, with investigators examining the crew’s actions during the attempted landing.

The five victims were airport cleaning workers who had been traveling in a company van. Two other people in the van survived, while both pilots aboard the cargo aircraft also survived the crash.

The crash caused a major disruption at Miami International Airport and triggered a federal investigation. The NTSB is continuing to examine the aircraft’s flight data, cockpit recordings, landing sequence and other factors that may have contributed to the accident.

The tragedy has also led to legal action. The family of Yoel Rodriguez Naranjo filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against Amazon, 21 Air and other parties, alleging that failures in safety, training and oversight contributed to the crash. Those allegations have not been established in court.
