Thousands of protesters took to the streets in Ireland during U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit, voicing opposition to his policies and the actions of his administration. The demonstrations took place alongside Trump’s meetings with Irish political leaders and his appearance at the Irish Open.
Large demonstrations were planned in Dublin as well as near Shannon Airport and Trump’s golf resort in County Clare. Protesters raised concerns over U.S. foreign policy, the war in the Middle East and Washington’s support for Israel. Some demonstrators carried pro-Palestinian signs and called for an end to U.S. military involvement.
Trump’s visit included meetings with Irish President Catherine Connolly and Taoiseach Micheál Martin. Connolly, who had previously criticized Trump, used the meeting to convey concerns about the normalization of war and international conflicts.
The protests highlighted the political divisions surrounding Trump’s foreign-policy agenda. Despite the demonstrations, Irish and U.S. officials emphasized the importance of the strong economic relationship between the two countries, particularly the role of American companies in Ireland.
Trump’s visit also attracted attention after he said he would “love” to see a united Ireland, a remark that drew criticism from pro-British unionists in Northern Ireland. The comments added another politically sensitive dimension to an already closely watched trip.
The CNN video report focuses on the anti-Trump demonstrations taking place on the sidelines of the president’s Ireland visit, showing how his trip became a major subject of public protest as well as diplomacy.
