New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) came under criticism after video from the 25th-anniversary 9/11 memorial ceremony appeared to show the two smiling and laughing briefly while victims’ names were being read at Ground Zero.

The moment quickly circulated online and triggered backlash from some 9/11 victims’ relatives and political commentators, who argued that the ceremony called for a more solemn demeanor.

However, the footage has also prompted debate over whether a brief exchange was being taken out of context. Supporters of Mamdani and AOC pointed out that other political figures were also seen interacting during the lengthy ceremony.

The event marked 25 years since the September 11, 2001 attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people. This year’s Ground Zero ceremony also included a new moment of silence honoring people who later died from illnesses connected to 9/11 exposure.

The controversy over the video comes against the backdrop of a deeply emotional anniversary, as victims’ families, first responders and political leaders gathered to remember those killed in the attacks and those who died in the years afterward.
