The United States marked the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on Friday with solemn ceremonies in New York City, at the Pentagon and at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Pennsylvania.
At Ground Zero in New York, victims’ family members gathered to read the names of those who died. The ceremony began with a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., the time the first hijacked plane struck the World Trade Center’s North Tower. This year’s remembrance also included recognition of people who later died from illnesses connected to the attacks and their aftermath.
Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the attacks, which targeted the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Twenty-five years later, memorial ceremonies continue to bring together victims’ families, survivors, first responders and political leaders to honor those lost.
Vice President JD Vance joined former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Joe Biden at the Ground Zero ceremony. President Donald Trump separately marked the anniversary at the Pentagon.
The anniversary also highlighted the lasting consequences of 9/11. Thousands of first responders, recovery workers and others exposed to toxic dust and debris have suffered serious health problems in the years since the attacks.
Across the country, communities held vigils, memorial services and moments of silence, while the Tribute in Light once again illuminated the New York City skyline in memory of those who died.
Twenty-five years later, the message of the anniversary remains one of remembrance, resilience and the importance of preserving the stories of those who were lost.
