A deadly cargo-plane crash at Miami International Airport is raising new questions about a runway safety system known as EMAS β Engineered Materials Arresting System.
The system uses a bed of specially engineered, crushable material at the end of a runway. When an aircraft overruns the runway, its landing gear sinks into the material, creating resistance that can rapidly slow and stop the plane. CNN reports that EMAS is installed at roughly 70 U.S. airports, but Miami International Airport does not have the system.
The Amazon-branded Boeing 767, operated by 21 Air, overran Runway 30 at Miami and continued beyond the runway, crossing a road before coming to a stop near an Amazon logistics facility. Five people on the ground were killed, while others were injured.

Investigators have not concluded that EMAS would have prevented the deaths. NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said investigators will examine the airport’s runway-safety arrangements, but it is too early to determine whether EMAS would have changed the outcome.
