📌 Topic: Republican strategy and the 2026 US midterm elections

Republicans are stepping up their campaign offensive ahead of the November 3, 2026, US midterm elections, targeting Democratic-held House and Senate seats while also increasing spending to defend Republican districts that party leaders once considered relatively secure.
The shift comes as Republicans try to protect their narrow House majority. Reuters reported Sunday that Republican groups have begun spending in at least 39 congressional races where they had not previously deployed significant resources this election cycle. Party leaders have warned some campaigns that internal data shows their districts could be more competitive than public polling suggests.

Republican groups have also built a substantial advertising reserve. According to AdImpact data cited by Reuters, Republicans had reserved at least $888 million in advertising for the coming weeks, compared with at least $666 million for Democrats. Since Labor Day, Republican-leaning super PACs have spent about $309.7 million compared with $174.2 million supporting Democratic candidates, according to Federal Election Commission data cited by Reuters.
At the same time, Republican candidates are trying to shape the election around issues including taxes, immigration, crime and cultural issues, rather than allowing every race to focus solely on President Donald Trump. A CNN analysis of September television advertising found Republican candidates and groups had largely avoided mentioning Trump directly, while Democratic campaigns and groups were substantially more likely to feature him in advertisements attacking Republican candidates.
That strategy has not meant complete separation from Trump. Some Republican candidates continue to highlight cooperation with the president, particularly on tax legislation and other administration priorities. Others in competitive districts have publicly disagreed with Trump on selected issues, including immigration, tariffs and foreign policy.

Republicans are also seeking opportunities in Democratic-held districts that party strategists believe could become competitive. Meanwhile, the decision to spend heavily in traditionally Republican areas shows that GOP campaign organizations are also preparing for the possibility that voters dissatisfied with the administration could make normally safe seats more competitive.
The competing campaign strategies are developing against a backdrop of voter concerns about the economy, inflation, immigration and the president’s record. Polling and advertising data provide snapshots of the political environment, but they do not determine the eventual outcome of the November elections.
