📌 Topic: US congressional redistricting and the 2026 midterm elections

The United States is experiencing an unusually intense wave of mid-decade congressional redistricting, with states changing House district boundaries just months before the 2026 midterm elections. Congressional maps are normally redrawn once a decade after the US Census, making the current round of changes particularly unusual.
Since the summer of 2025, 10 states — Alabama, California, Florida, Louisiana, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas and Utah — have undertaken changes to their congressional maps, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. The changes affect millions of voters and have triggered multiple lawsuits and disputes over which maps can legally be used in November.

Republican-led states have generally pursued maps designed to alter the partisan makeup of congressional districts. CNN reported that Republicans have gained an advantage in the broader redistricting fight, although Democrats have also pursued new maps, most notably in California and Virginia. Virginia voters approved a new congressional map in April that could change several House districts.
Missouri has become one of the most closely watched legal battles. The state’s Supreme Court blocked a Republican-drawn map, while a federal appeals court later ruled in favor of using the new districts. The 8th US Circuit Court of Appeals paused the effect of its ruling until September 28 to give the US Supreme Court time to consider the dispute.
The Missouri dispute is especially complicated because absentee ballots have already been distributed under the older map. Changing the boundaries again could require election officials to deal with ballots that have already been sent or cast. The new map significantly changes several districts, including the Kansas City-based seat held by Democratic Rep. Emanuel Cleaver.

The redistricting effort has broader implications for control of the US House. Both parties are examining how new boundaries could change the number of competitive districts, but the precise electoral effects remain uncertain because several maps are still being challenged in court. CNN’s tracker notes that the legal battles could continue close to the November election.
The current redistricting wave therefore represents a major departure from the traditional once-a-decade process. With court decisions still pending in some states, the boundaries that voters use in November are not yet settled everywhere, making redistricting one of the central institutional issues surrounding the 2026 midterms.
