More than 300 South Korean workers detained during last yearβs immigration raid at a Hyundai electric-vehicle facility in Georgia are now taking legal action against the U.S. government. Administrative claims have begun to be filed with nine federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, ICE, CBP, FBI, and the Departments of Justice and Labor.
The workers were swept up in a September 4, 2025, raid at the Hyundai-LG battery facility in Ellabell, Georgia, about 25 miles west of Savannah. Authorities detained 475 workers, most of them South Korean nationals, in what officials described at the time as the largest single-site operation in Homeland Security Investigations history.

According to workers interviewed by CNN, some said they were arrested without clear explanations or Korean interpreters, shackled and required to sign documents they could not understand. Some also described overcrowded and uncomfortable conditions at the ICE detention facility in Folkston, Georgia. These are allegations made by the workers and have not been established by a court.
One worker identified by CNN only as Kim has filed the first individual claim. He alleges that he was unlawfully detained for seven days and suffered humiliation, emotional distress and lasting psychological trauma. His claim seeks damages related to confiscated belongings, lost work and psychological harm, while also alleging false imprisonment and abuse of process.
The workers’ attorney says the claims are being filed under the Federal Tort Claims Act, a process that can precede a federal lawsuit. The attorney said the workers want the U.S. government to acknowledge what they describe as a serious injustice and to explain why they were detained.

The U.S. government disputes the characterization of the raid. DHS told CNN that ICE executed a judicial search warrant as part of an ongoing criminal investigation into alleged unlawful employment practices and other federal crimes. CBP referred CNN to its earlier statement that those arrested were suspected of violating U.S. immigration or visa rules.
The legal challenge could become a major test of the government’s conduct during the Hyundai raid and could also force federal agencies to provide more information about the evidence behind the arrests and the treatment of the workers in custody.
