An Iranian commercial vessel was reportedly struck by a projectile near Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, killing one person and injuring several others, according to Iranian state media. CNN reported that the incident occurred amid an ongoing confrontation between the United States and Iran over control of the strategically important waterway.

The attack took place near Qeshm Island, which lies close to Iranโ€™s major port city of Bandar Abbas and is strategically important to Tehranโ€™s efforts to control shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Before the war, roughly 20 million barrels of oil a day passed through the waterway, although traffic has fallen dramatically during the conflict.

Iranian state media said the vessel was hit late Saturday and that four people were injured, while the governor of Qeshm blamed what he described as a โ€œterrorist enemy.โ€ The identity of the attacker and the type of projectile involved had not been established. The U.S. military had not immediately commented.

The incident comes at a particularly sensitive moment. Tehran is preparing to meet regional leaders in Oman to discuss the management of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian officials have emphasized that reopening the waterway depends on the United States ending its blockade and meeting Iranโ€™s conditions.

Separately, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that another vessel was struck by an unidentified projectile in the Strait late Saturday. A fire broke out aboard that vessel, and local authorities assisted with evacuating crew members.

The latest incidents are adding to concerns over the security of one of the world’s most important energy routes, with continued disruption threatening to put further pressure on global oil prices and international shipping.
