U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in Dublin on Saturday for a two-day visit to Ireland, where he is scheduled to meet Irish President Catherine Connolly and Taoiseach Micheál Martin before traveling to County Clare for the Irish Open at his Doonbeg golf resort.
Trump’s visit is focused partly on strengthening U.S.-Ireland economic and business ties. Irish officials have highlighted the close economic, cultural and people-to-people relationship between the two countries.
The trip also drew significant political attention after Trump said he would “love” to see a united Ireland, describing reunification as something he believes will eventually happen. His comments immediately sparked criticism from pro-British unionists in Northern Ireland, while the British government maintained that there is currently no basis for a new referendum.
Trump’s schedule combines official diplomacy with his personal interest in golf. After meetings in Dublin, he is traveling to Doonbeg, County Clare, where his golf resort is hosting the 2026 Irish Open.
The visit has also generated protests and a major security operation. Ireland’s police said the operation would be one of the largest ever implemented by An Garda Síochána, with temporary road closures and extensive security measures around Dublin and County Clare.
Trump’s Ireland trip is his first visit to the Republic of Ireland as president in his second term, combining diplomatic meetings, economic discussions and a high-profile sporting appearance.
