A 28-year-old Sikh truck driver was stabbed 17 times during an attack at a Wyoming rest stop, leaving him seriously injured and prompting renewed concern among Sikh and South Asian communities in the United States.
The attack happened early September 13 at the Bitter Creek Rest Area on Interstate 80, between Cheyenne and Salt Lake City. According to court documents, the driver, identified as Gurvinder Singh, had stopped to use the restroom when a man allegedly followed him inside and attacked him from behind. Singh suffered multiple wounds, including injuries to his neck, chest and arms.
Authorities arrested Andrew Kris Bzdak shortly afterward. He faces a charge of attempted first-degree murder and was being held on $1 million bond. A family at the rest stop reportedly heard the attack, followed the suspect’s truck onto the highway and provided information that helped police locate him.
Singh was airlifted to a hospital in Casper, Wyoming, where he spent five days recovering. AP reported that he was discharged and hopes to eventually return to driving his truck across Wyoming.
Authorities have not established a motive and have not publicly determined that the attack was a hate crime. Singh’s representatives and Sikh community advocates have nevertheless raised concerns about the wider climate facing Sikh truck drivers, particularly after recent social-media rhetoric targeting South Asian commercial drivers.
The incident has drawn additional attention because of a recently deleted Department of Homeland Security social-media post featuring a South Asian-looking man identified as “Mr. Singh” and criticizing immigrant truck drivers. DHS has rejected suggestions that the post was connected to the Wyoming attack and said it would not speculate about the suspect’s motive.
For Sikh truck drivers who spend long hours traveling across the country, the attack has become a source of anxiety. Community members say they are concerned about whether hostility toward immigrant drivers could translate into further violence, while investigators continue to determine what prompted the Wyoming stabbing.
