President Donald Trump is facing renewed scrutiny over claims about his administration’s accomplishments after citing several achievements while defending his decision to bar CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House.
Trump has argued that news organizations have an obligation to report on what he describes as major successes of his administration. During remarks defending the media restrictions, he cited claims including that his administration had “settled eight wars” and that $21 trillion was flowing into the United States. CNN fact-checker Daniel Dale said those figures were not supported by the available evidence.
The dispute comes amid a broader confrontation between Trump and several major news organizations. Trump announced on September 18 that CNN, MS NOW and Politico would be barred from the White House, accusing them of publishing what he called “fake news.” The three organizations subsequently filed a federal lawsuit challenging the restrictions.
Trump’s administration has also promoted its own account of its record. On September 18, Trump posted a list titled “Top 25 Trump Accomplishments of Term Three,” highlighting issues including border enforcement, tax cuts, investment, tariffs, manufacturing, military spending and other policies.
However, independent fact-checkers have found that some of the administration’s broader economic claims require significant qualification. FactCheck.org, for example, reported that Trump’s claims of more than $20 trillion in outside investment substantially exceeded the figures supported by available data. It also found that some investment announcements listed by the White House were pledges rather than completed investments.
The White House has responded to criticism of its relationship with the press by launching “Trump TV: The Essentials Station,” a 24-hour livestream on YouTube featuring speeches, announcements and other administration material. Deputy Assistant to the President Kaelan Dorr said the service would provide the administration’s “greatest hits” and argued that some accomplishments had been reported inaccurately or not reported by the press.
The media dispute has also affected the traditional White House television press pool. ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News and NBC suspended their participation in pooled presidential coverage after CNN was prevented from carrying out its scheduled pool assignment. The networks said the public has an interest in receiving independent information about the government.
The three barred organizations argue in their lawsuit that the White House retaliated against them because of their reporting. The administration maintains that the outlets remain free to report outside the White House and disputes the characterization of its actions as an attack on the press. A federal court is now considering the legal challenge.
