More than 100 people now say they suffered brain injuries after riding the X2 roller coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Southern California during the past two years, according to attorneys representing the riders. The claims come after a CNN investigation documented a history of serious injuries and deaths allegedly connected to the ride.
Attorneys announced three new lawsuits against Six Flags this week. Two involve riders previously featured in CNN’s investigation — Pamela Guillen, 40, and Naomi Greer-Wilkinson, 25 — who suffered severe brain injuries after riding X2 in July. Doctors who treated the women determined their injuries resulted from a traumatic rapid acceleration-deceleration event experienced while riding the coaster, according to medical documentation reviewed by CNN.
Guillen reportedly lost consciousness after leaving the ride and required emergency brain surgery. She later said she had to relearn how to walk and talk and continues to experience headaches and brain fog. Greer-Wilkinson remains in a coma, according to her family and attorneys.
The third lawsuit was filed by Los Angeles attorney Michael Wilk, who alleges that he suffered massive bleeding in his brain after riding X2 in February. He reportedly required multiple brain surgeries and says his injuries have left him with severe headaches, memory problems and difficulty practicing law.
X2 is one of Six Flags Magic Mountain’s signature attractions. The ride features seats that rotate 360 degrees while the train reaches speeds of nearly 80 mph, with large drops and rapid changes in movement. CNN’s earlier investigation found more than a dozen reports of serious injuries and hospitalizations associated with the attraction over nearly two decades, including at least two deaths allegedly linked to the ride.
The roller coaster has remained closed since July 12, following the latest incidents. California workplace-safety officials are investigating, while Six Flags has declined to comment on pending litigation. The company has previously defended X2 in court, saying the ride undergoes regular testing and that its forces are not sufficient to cause traumatic brain injuries to a normal rider using the attraction as instructed.
Attorneys said they have heard from hundreds of additional people, although some may not be eligible to sue because of legal deadlines, lack of medical documentation or injuries that were not brain-related. CNN noted that it has not independently verified the claims of the riders who recently came forward.
