A Sikh truck driver was stabbed 17 times in an attack at a Wyoming rest area, leaving him hospitalized and raising concerns among Sikh and South Asian communities across the United States. Authorities say the attack appeared to be unprovoked, but they have not yet determined a motive or publicly classified it as a hate crime.

The attack happened early Sunday at the Bitter Creek Rest Area along Interstate 80 in Sweetwater County. According to an arrest warrant, the victim, identified by his attorney only as Singh, was followed into a men’s restroom by a man who allegedly attacked him from behind. He suffered wounds to his neck, chest and other parts of his body.

Authorities identified the suspect as Andrew Bzdak, who was arrested after leaving the rest area in a truck. A family that heard screams from the restroom reportedly followed Bzdak’s vehicle along I-80 and contacted police, helping authorities locate him near Rawlins. Bzdak is being held on a $1 million bond and faces a charge of attempted first-degree murder.

The victim was airlifted to a hospital in Casper and is recovering from his injuries. His representatives said he was in stable condition and that the attack left him shaken. According to the victim’s account, he did not know why he had been targeted and said there had been no apparent confrontation before the stabbing.

The case has drawn particular attention from Sikh organizations because of concerns about recent anti-Sikh and anti-South Asian rhetoric surrounding the trucking industry. Advocates have pointed to a recently deleted Department of Homeland Security social-media post featuring an AI-generated South Asian man referred to as “Mr. Singh.” DHS has rejected suggestions that its post was connected to the Wyoming attack and said attributing the stabbing to the agency would be “reckless and false.”

Sikh community representatives are calling for investigators to examine whether the victim’s identity played any role in the attack. However, officials have emphasized that there is currently no established motive, and no public determination has been made that the stabbing was motivated by anti-Sikh or anti-immigrant bias.

The investigation remains ongoing. Bzdak is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on September 24, while the victim continues to recover from his injuries.
