Former “American Idol” contestant Caleb Flynn is standing trial in Ohio over the killing of his wife, Ashley Flynn, nearly seven months after her death. Jury selection began Thursday in Miami County, with the trial expected to last about two weeks.
Flynn, 40, is accused of fatally shooting Ashley, 37, inside their home in Tipp City, Ohio, on February 16. Prosecutors allege that he then staged the crime scene to make it appear that an intruder had entered the house and killed her. Flynn has pleaded not guilty and maintains that someone broke into the home.
The case began with a frantic 911 call from Flynn, who told dispatchers that someone had broken into his home and shot his wife. Police body-camera footage later showed officers arriving at the house and finding Flynn visibly distressed as they investigated the scene.
Ashley was a middle school teacher and volleyball coach who was also the mother of the couple’s two daughters. Prosecutors are expected to call several members of Ashley’s family as witnesses, including the daughters, who were in the home when their mother was killed.
Flynn was arrested three days after Ashley’s death and has remained in custody with a $3.5 million bond. He faces charges including aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault, tampering with evidence and witness intimidation. If convicted of the most serious charge, he could face life in prison without parole.
Prosecutors have not publicly detailed a possible motive, while Flynn’s defense attorney has argued that authorities may have rushed to judgment. The defense maintains that the prosecution must prove its allegations beyond a reasonable doubt.
Flynn briefly appeared on “American Idol” Season 12 in 2013, where he spoke publicly about his wife and his desire to pursue music. More than a decade later, the former contestant is now facing a murder trial that has drawn significant attention in his Ohio community.
