A Mississippi grand jury has unanimously declined to indict anyone in the death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells, whose body was found in the waters near Horn Island two days after he disappeared during a Fourth of July boating trip with friends.
The Jackson County grand jury issued a “no true bill,” meaning it found insufficient evidence to bring criminal charges. The panel reviewed witness testimony, physical and digital evidence, GPS information, cellphone data, photographs and videos as part of its investigation.
According to the grand jury report, the position, condition, timing and location of Wells’ body were consistent with drowning. However, both the Mississippi State Chief Medical Examiner and an independent forensic pathologist hired by Wells’ family had determined that the cause and manner of death remained undetermined.
The investigation involved 132 subpoenas and testimony from 43 witnesses, according to officials. The grand jury also reviewed phone forensic reports, GPS records and security-camera footage. Investigators concluded that there was no credible evidence that people who traveled to or from Horn Island on the boats involved in the July 4 outing committed criminal conduct connected to Wells’ death.
The case had attracted national attention and intense public speculation, including questions about whether Wells’ death was racially motivated. The grand jury found no evidence supporting allegations of criminal or racially motivated wrongdoing. District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath also said the investigation found no evidence supporting those allegations.
Wells’ family and their attorney, Ben Crump, have challenged the conclusion. Crump said the grand jury decision does not explain how Wells died and pointed to bruising on the back of Wells’ head and body that remains unexplained. The family has called for greater transparency and has requested that the U.S. Department of Justice conduct an independent investigation.
The grand jury left open the possibility of further action if credible new evidence emerges suggesting that Wells’ death was not accidental. Under Mississippi law, the case could therefore be reconsidered if significant new evidence becomes available.
