The Trump administration has approved a potential $24.3 billion sale of F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia, advancing a major defense deal that could significantly expand the kingdom’s military capabilities. The proposed package includes 48 F-35 Lightning II aircraft and 49 Pratt & Whitney F135 engines, along with communications equipment, spare parts and other support.
The US State Department formally notified Congress of the proposed sale. The deal is not yet final and remains subject to congressional review and approval. If completed, delivery and production would take years.
Saudi Arabia has sought the F-35 for years as part of efforts to modernize its air force. The kingdom already operates US-made F-15 fighters as well as European aircraft, but the F-35 would provide a significant new capability through its stealth technology and advanced sensors.
The proposed sale has also raised questions about the longstanding US policy of maintaining Israel’s “qualitative military edge” in the Middle East. Israel is currently the only country in the region operating the F-35. The State Department said the proposed Saudi sale “will not alter the military balance in the region.”
Another concern involves Saudi Arabia’s growing defense and technological relationship with China. US intelligence agencies have reportedly raised questions about whether sensitive F-35 technology could be exposed to Chinese access through Saudi military facilities and technology partnerships. Some US lawmakers have publicly objected to moving ahead with the sale because of those concerns.
The agreement comes as the Middle East faces renewed military tensions. Saudi Arabia has recently faced attacks linked to the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen, while the wider region remains affected by conflict involving Iran and other armed groups. The State Department said the proposed sale would strengthen Saudi Arabia’s ability to deter threats and improve cooperation with US and regional forces.
The proposed F-35 agreement therefore faces a congressional review as Washington weighs Saudi Arabia’s defense needs, regional military dynamics and concerns over protection of sensitive US military technology.
