The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, has been temporarily closed to the public amid a growing legal battle over the institution’s future, renovations and an effort to add President Donald Trump’s name to the building.
The Kennedy Center’s board voted to close the venue following a dramatic meeting involving Trump and board members. By Tuesday evening, the building’s doors had been locked and barriers were placed near entrances. On Wednesday, security personnel continued restricting public access while construction crews worked around the property.
However, the closure immediately raised legal questions. Democratic Rep. Joyce Beatty, who is involved in a lawsuit over the Kennedy Center, asked a federal judge for an emergency hearing after members of her legal team were denied entry and told the building was closed. Judge Christopher Cooper ordered the Trump administration to provide information about the building’s status and its plans.
Kennedy Center officials have described the shutdown as temporary, citing safety concerns and what they characterize as serious structural problems. A court filing said continued access to certain areas could pose safety risks. CNN reported that the administration has said the closure would initially last about seven days, although the board had previously voted on a much longer renovation shutdown.
The dispute is also tied to Trump’s effort to have his name added to the Kennedy Center. Judge Cooper ruled that the institution cannot install a memorial or inscription honoring Trump without authorization from Congress. The ruling followed an earlier decision that blocked the effort to rename the center after Trump.
Trump has argued that his administration should receive recognition for helping finance or organize major repairs. He has also warned that the planned renovation could be halted if his name cannot be added. The administration has appealed the judge’s ruling.
Meanwhile, the future of the landmark performing arts center remains uncertain. A Washington Post report said the center had officially closed to the public as renovation plans moved forward, while the ongoing court proceedings could determine how and when the institution can reopen.
